“Costa de las Focas” reserve is in full breeding season!

Since the breeding season started on April, “Costa de las Focas” reserve has seen the birth of 67 pups. Number that is already a record for the history of the project and we hope it rises a bit more before its end.

We really hope that it will happen this way, as there are still a few months until the end of the breeding season and to the last 2014 birth. If it is as usual, this will happen at early November.

With the monitor installed at the biological station located above one of the main breeding caves and the one that is at the hut on top of the second monitored cave of the three caves being  used by the colony, we watch how pups grow. Every day we check how are they developing and if any of them is missing. Every change detected, is written down at the file created for each of them. This file help us, mainly, to check how pups are growing and that no one is missing.

When being born, the pup is always next  to its mother, who stays close to its pup during the first days of life. The little one, during this time, dedicates its time feeding on milk and sleeping, being away the essentially needed  from its mother. When a few days later, the mother starts to go out of the cave to feed, the pup stays inside, waiting its return, to go back to its side.

A little bit over the first month of age, the pup starts to molt its fur. The jet-black starts to change to pearl-grey and what it was a pup starts to be a youngster. These cute pups, spend hours playing in front of the cave that saw them be born, normally under the attentive look of their mother.

There is not better emotion during this time of the year, that to close one of those pup files around two months later of being started its monitoring, because that means that they have completed their molt, start to be more independent and their monitoring has to be done with other different techniques.

Unfortunately, no all the pups that are born survive to adulthood, there are many threats they will have to face until being reproductive. But, the ones that will make it, will have a pup every year, almost at the same date and during many breeding seasons, for enjoyment and pleasure of all the ones that want to keep seeing how new members are being added to the colony of “Costa de las Focas” reserve.
