The Mediterranean Monk Seal Conservation Program is managed by the
non-profit CBD Habitat Foundation.
In this program, CBD Habitat acts within the framework of the Action Plan for Recovery of the
Mediterranean
Monk Seal in the Eastern Atlantic
Signed by Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Mauritania, it provides a framework of international cooperation
for coordination activities with the objective of recovering the Atlantic monk seal populations and guaranteeing the
continued
existence of this species, one of the most greatly threatened marine mammals in the world.
CBD Habitat is the entity responsible for executing this program, along with the Mauritanian NGO Annajah.
We have a team of experts in Spain and Mauritania who design, plan and perform tracking of the conservation activities and analyze the data collected in the field (analysis of the photo-identification sessions, production of individual animal identification catalogues, construction of the population’s demographic observatory, analysis of the data on marking of the animals via satellite, etc.). The on-site team is present every day of the year, monitoring the Seal Coast Reserve to avoid the placement of fishing equipment, prevent any disturbances of the seals from land, perform ongoing tracking of the seals and apply the conservation actions which have been designed.
