His Majesty Queen Sofia and the Monk Seal in Faunia

On Friday, May 11, the first exhibition about the species in Spain entitled “The Return of the Monk Seal” was inaugurated at the Faunia facilities, in order to raise awareness and make known to the general public about the monk seal of the Mediterranean.

We were honored by the presence of Her Majesty Queen Sofía. In her first visit to Faunia, Doña Sofía was received by Mr. Javier Cachón, General Director of Quality and Environmental Evaluation and Natural Environment of MAPAMA, Spain; the representative of the Embassy of Mauritania, Mr. Moulaye Ahmed Labeid; the patron of the Parques Reunidos Foundation, Mr. Jesús Fernández; the director of the Conservation Program of the Monk Seal of the CBD-Habitat Foundation, Mr. Pablo Fernández de Larrinoa; the director of the South European Division of Parques Reunidos, Mr. César Foyedo and the director of Faunia, Mr. Enrique Pérez.

Mrs Sofía has always stood out for her love of animals, her involvement and great sensitivity towards the recovery of endangered species, such as the monk seal, to which she has special esteem, as she has stated on three more occasions. In May of 1994, on an official visit to Mauritania, he became interested in seeing the Cabo Blanco colony, but it was not possible due to diplomatic and agenda problems. A second cooperation visit in 2005 to Mauritania, allowed him to share with us the works and results of the project. In February 2018, as part of the celebration of the Chinese New Year, in which the conservation program of the giant Panda was renewed at the Zoo Aquarium in Madrid, chaired by Her Majesty Mrs Sofía, together with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic China, Mr. Lyu Fan, we gave him a photograph of the first offspring that was born on an open-air beach in 2009 and to which we put in his honor, the name of Sofia.

During the tour of the exhibition, the Queen once again showed her great interest in the species by asking us many questions, debating its conservation and posing satisfied with some of the photographs, extending the visit beyond the time established by the protocol. The exhibition was possible thanks to the Parques Reunidos Foundation, with which we have an important collaboration agreement and the Smurfit Kappa company, in addition to many other entities

Opening hours of the exhibition: 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Until december 31). Educational sessions: 4:00 pm
