4k technology is coming at Cabo Blanco

Cabo Blanco peninsula is located in the middle of the Western coast of the Sahara desert. The colony is on its west side, in a stretch with cliffs over 10 m high, at the base of which are the marine caves that seals use, facing the Atlantic Ocean with its incessant waves. Complicated conditions that make it difficult to monitor the population. Therefore, from the beginning, we had to devise our own control systems that would allow us to know the seals inside and outside the caves, sharpen our wits.

In 1994, we were able to install the first video surveillance camera hanging from the ceiling of one of the main caves, and look at the privacy of its interior from a monitor inside a small house built in the desert. Since then, video surveillance cameras have been installed in the 3 main caves, first in analog mode (with recordings on VHS tapes), and now, with 4K digital technology.

Thousands of recording hours and repairs

The harsh working conditions of these equipment hanging from the entrance of the caves and subjected to the force of the sea, has forced a continuous effort of repairs and substitutions, but they give us an incalculable benefit to be able to follow the evolution of the animals inside the caves, without having to bother them, watching the births and the growth of the young, identifying them and studying their behavior on land.
