Working in Madeira on monk seals tracking setting

In order to identify the marine habitat used by the monk seal of the population of Madeira, a non-invasive tagging device with Fastloc GPS receivers and a system for receiving information has been developed technically.

This non-invasive methodology, without the need to capture, immobilize or sedate them, developed and successfully tested by the CBD-Habitat Foundation in Mauritania, has been successfully applied in the colony of the Madeira archipelago. Although not without great difficulties given the particular geomorphological conditions of the terrestrial environment here.

Taking advantage of the fact that the seals use one of the caves of the Desertas Islands, and an adjacent beach, with greater intensity, all the work of this action has been developed in this environment.

Next to the GPS there is a TDR (Time Data Recorder), device that collects diving depth and time data, status in water and dry, every 10 seconds; and a UHF beacon to detect the presence of the animal on land through a specific receptor. All this integrated into the bracelet system designed by CBD-Habitat.
